There is a lot of research dedicated to how memory works in the brain. There are some areas of the brain that are very important for memory – such as the hippocampus. Brain cells, neurons, are connected to each other and can communicate with each other. These connections can change, and it is thought that a memory is when these connections become stronger over time. Certain things, like emotion, can make these connections stronger which is maybe why we remember things that were more emotional, like really happy moments, compared to remembering what you ate for breakfast two weeks ago. A lot of what we have learned about memory is from people with memory problems, or amnesia.
