      That is a really good question, and a complicated one. We define the different areas of the brain based on different things. You can define the areas based on how they look, their anatomy (historically this was the method used). You can also define them based on the different types of brain cells that they have. Or you can define them based on what they do. Often we have to re-define them when we find out that one area of the brain is actually better defined as two separate areas.
      One of the simplest definitions of brain areas is that the human brain is divided into ‘lobes’ which all have different functions, this is a simplified anatomical definition but still very valid, see here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lobes_of_the_brain
