That is a really hard question – I think that when I started studying it was the big questions – like what is consciousness and how is our brain involved in generating it. But now I find all sorts of things interesting, the more I learn the more I find interesting. For example, we think that we see is ‘real’ but actually our brain does a lot of processing before our perception of what we see.
We have also learned a lot of interesting things about the brain from when things go wrong in disease. When I was about 18 I read a book called ‘The man who mistook his wife for a hat’ by Oliver Sacks – which is fantastic, and got me even more interested in the brain. I recommend it!
