A computer and some scanners to look inside the human body. I normally use CT scanners (they use X-rays, which can damage the body, so we can’t do this too often to people) or MRI. MRI relies on changing the magnetic properties of the water in our body. This is very safe, so we repeat MRI scans very often.

With the computer, I use a lot of programs that I write myself using a language called C or else Matlab. Do you like computers?

In the lab I use machines for measuring DNA and figuring out its code – called DNA sequencing.

I also use a very cool computer called Eddie. Eddie is actually loads and loads of computers in different locations that can act like one very powerful computer, and can be controlled from my laptop. Eddie can analyse data that would take about 30 years to analyse on a standard laptop all by itself over the weekend – I just need to give it instructions on Friday and my Monday I have my results. Very cool.
