Interesting question. To make really important discoveries, you need a lot of luck, but most importantly to be able to think coehrently in a different way from most people and to really narrow down and focus on a given research question. You also need a lot of self-confidence: if your ideas are truly groundbreaking, the initial reaction from other people will most definitely be negative.
I can’t see myself posessing all these qualities unfortunately and aim for a more modest, less ground-breaking contribution to science.
Would you like to become a (ground-breaking famous) scientist?
That is a tough one to answer and it means I need to work out my future!
I would love to think my research will be used to make better and safer vaccines. While I love research, I think I prefer communicating science to people. Because of this I probably will move into something like working in a science museum when I finish up my PhD.
