• Question: How many years did you have to go to university for this job ?

      My undergraduate degree was 4 years long (4 years in average in Ireland). I think in the UK it’s more common to spend only 3 years on your undergraduate degree. Once you have a degree you’re qualified to apply for PhDs or masters degrees or go into industry,

      Hi Lauren.

      Different people have different paths to becoming a scientist. I did a 5-year degree and then a 4-year PhD, so I guess 9 in total. It didn’t feel long at all though – I had a great time throughout.

      I spent 4 years doing my undergraduate degree (in England it’s 3 years, in Scotland it’s 4) and I’m now doing a PhD which is like a job but after that’s finished (4 years) I’ll be Dr Nick, and I’ll be able to get better jobs. But I’m already working as a scientist after 4 years of uni. If you want to work in science you don’t have to go to uni, you could go to college and then become a technician in a lab (someone who helps scientists) and work your way up from there. There are different ways to become a scientist and be a scientist.
