Like which grades did I need?

I got A’s in Chemistry, Biology, English, and French, and a C in Maths at Higher (which I think is like A level), and the I got an A and a B at Advanced Higher Chemistry and Biology. This let me go to university, and then after I got my Degree (a 1st class BSc in Human Embryology and Developmental Biology) I started studying for my PhD, which I’m doing just now 🙂

It takes a lot of hard work to be a scientist, but you shouldn’t let it intimidate you. In life the things that are hard are often the things most worth doing. If you really love something and are interested in it (it doesn’t have to be science) then you should try your very hardest to make that thing your job, so you can be happy going to work.

What A levels I did? I did Maths and Physics (compulsory for a Physics degree) and then also Chemistry, Biology and Portuguese.

It is important to have a good science background for research work, but being persistent and loving what you do is even more important. I even know someone who is now a Professor but failed all his A levels! (It was much harder for him to get a science job afterwards though.)

I studied over in Ireland so we have a slightly different system than the A levels. I studied Chemistry, Biology, French, Geography, English, Maths and Gaeilc. I managed to get mostly Bs and As in these

After high school I went onto University to do a general science degree and I specialised in Immunology after two years. Uni was a lot of fun but also a bit hard (I nearly failed second year! Eek!) but once I got into Immunology I actually really liked reading more about the subject and started doing much better in the exams.

After finishing my degree I wanted to try my hand at doing more research since I liked the lab experiments on my course. This lead to me doing a PhD which I’m now coming towards the end of.
