Seriously, it’s learning new things, being able to pursue your interests and being driven by the feeling that if you succeed and make a cool discovery, you may really help someone in the process.
The best thing is that you get to do lots of different things and you never stop learning. I love my job because I get to pursue my curiosity, to keep asking questions and then trying to answer them. Also, you get to be part of a team and learn and work with other people doing super cool stuff.
Having the freedom to be your own master and choosing what you study and how to study it. You get to switch your work to follow what’s interesting and what’s working well, it’s very flexible. This makes it exciting, and never boring! How many other jobs give you that sort of freedom!?
I like the variety that comes with managing your own schedule. I get bored and restless easily, and having control over what I work on everyday helps alleviate that.
It’s also nice to know that your work could really help people one day. My own research could be used to improve vaccines or help make new drugs to support cells as they cope with viral infections.
